Zirconia (ZrO2)

In opposite to other ceramic materials zirconia (ZrO2) has a high resistance against spreading of fissures. Additional Zirconia has a very high heat strain. Therefore its favorite use is the connection between ceramic and steel.


  • high heat strain (α=11 x 10 -6/K, similar to some kinds of steel)
  • Very good thermic insulation respectively low thermal conductivity (2,5 bis 3 W/mK)
  • High resistance against spreading of fissures(6,5 bis 8 MPam 1/2)
  • Capability to transport oxigen iones (used at measuring of oxygen partial pressure in lamda oxygen sensors

One more excellent characteristic is the combination of very low heat conductivity and very high strength of material. Also zirconia has the capability to transport oxigen iones. Zirconia –Components are much more expensive than aluminium-oxide components.
